So haven't posted in a long long time, and unfortunately no mix for you yet. But this is the first post of November and possibly the most important thing to happen this month was the release of Native Instruments S4 which is in one word amazing...looking. I have only read reviews (and watched ALL the youtube videos). The plan is to get one of these units ASAP as it not only has amazing hardware but also comes with the new S4 programme.

So music wise this winter for me has all been about dubstep and uk rap (and of course electro)
Right now my favorite tunes would have to be

AntiCitizenOne and myself went into the station a few days ago after each of us doing an hour set here at the house. We broadcast all four hours on justin.tv and part of it on blogger tv. We ran into a series of "technocal" difficulties, so hopefully in the future it will run more smoothly. Until then, this is a radio recording, I apologize for the sub-par quality, it was all in a rush and the default settings on this audio capture were clearing not adequate. Someday this recording might be a gem?

Hey hey,

So, lately my inbox has been flooded with requests for more mixes. The previous statement is a total lie. Actually, nobody has requested more mixes, and in reality I don't think I've ever gotten an email from a fan through this site. Hahaha, anyway seriously though, I did make another soundcloud account, so now I'm up to three. necessary, maybe not but that gives me six hours of upload time, and to be honest, I'm trying to put up like 4 hours a week or so, I do in fact need more space.

Anywho, eventually I'll be a pretty big deal around here and people will care, so I'm just taking preemptive measures to ensure that I can in fact meet the demands of all my "raving" fanatics (see what I did there?)

Been Busy, Now Back

The last few weeks of my life have been kind of hectic. I had exams and then moved into a house with some people. Until two nights ago I had not had a night of more than six hours of sleep in two weeks. Anywho, now in the downtime, I have had the chance to finally had a chance to get back to what I love most, the Starcraft II beta. No, haha just kidding (seriously though the beta is absolutely amazing fun), MUSIC!!!

I don't have any good mixes to show for you, you will have to trust me. But between these two tracks, you will be hearing about 30+ hours of time spent producing. So, enjoy.

Hey everyone, my name is Ross and I go by Anticitizen One. Thanks a lot of the invitation to this blog, hopefully I can contribute greatly. I go to Bowling Green State University in the United States along with DJ Empe. DJing right now is just a hobby but if I ever get the opportunity to play any major shows to get my name out I will take them.
I also do a radio show every week (or try to at least) at the schools radio station WBGU 88.1 FM. It's called Trance Paradigm and I play mainly trance and progressive but if I hear a track that isn't either and I like it, I will play it. I always record my shows and mixes and upload them to soundcloud, dropbox, or megaupload.

Small chance that I'll be deejaying the HvZ invitational after party. If I don't that's cool, but just in case I wanted to get a head start on possible tracks to play. The verdict is that I like this set a lot and I feel it will be the first half of an awesome night if indeed I am chosen to play the tunes. Anyway, a lot of fun to hit the decks again and mix in my style as it had been a while (unintentional rhyme).

AND i almost forgot. Lately my mixer has been a real piece and occasionally when i push the faders up to 10 it just cuts one of the left or right channels on the master. . .??? So yeah, don't mind that and pretend like it didn't fuck up decent transitions haha ok thanks :)

Hey Guys I've just come back from Austria after a week ski'ng.

On the first night some of my friends went out to a club. It was a pretty quiet night and my mate who is also a Dj got talking to the manager.

Long story short we were offered a paid gig.

Unfortunatly neither of had Cds or Laptops with us and were unable to play.

The moral of the story is...

ALWAYS bring CDs or at least a Hardrive with you on hoildays.

You might get offered a big gig.

The weekend....was sick!

hey there everyone! This weekend was insane. On Friday I was doing a house party gig, which was tons of fun, everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves so it made my night that much more enjoyable. Unfortunately the party was halted halfway through due to a noise complaint...even though I was only using a 2.1 pc speaker set haha I hope to never have to use such small powerless speakers ever again! Gotta give a shout to HMC my mc for the night who, unfortunately could not use the microphone due to technical difficulties, almost lost all his voice yelling poor guy haha.

On Saturday I was djaying my residence's formal dance. Lots of fun once again. This time HMC had a real microphone and really got the crowd excited.

here are some pictures from the formal dance, unfortunately nobody was capable of taking pictures on Friday :( HMC is wearing the funky vest, and David Kanters who featured in my song Rise is in the last picture.

all in all I'd say it was a good weekend, definitely got some offers to do house parties :P

The Pioneer made DJM-400 Mixer was designed as an entry-intermediate level 2 channel mixer complete with an effects processor for under $600. I know what you’re thinking, $600 isn’t something to sneeze and you’re right, there are other quality mixers out there for much less. A little more on that later…

First Look:
Using the DJM-400 for 8 months, I can say the build quality is very high. All the faders are extremely smooth with little resistance and the knobs and buttons are made of plastic but do not feel cheap at all. It has a good weight of 9lbs being made from stainless steel. The layout of the mixer is well designed having the 2 channels placed in their traditional method in the center with headphone & microphone settings to the left with the effects processor to the right.

The mixer is a very straight forward mixer with the only frills being the integrated effects. Although effects aren’t recommended for beginner DJ’s they are fun to throw into a mix and give that flare you might be looking for. Effects include Delay, Echo, Filter, Flanger, Phaser, Robot, Roll and the In-Loop Sampler which has a beat effects sections giving you the option of how long or short you want your effects to last. I’ll use the Filter and Flanger effects sometimes but I still learn to focus on my mixing. The mixer would be just as good without effects. The microphone feature does its job but one of the key features of this mixer is the split cue. It allows you to hear both channels in your headphones (each channel per ear). It comes in handy when you’re mixing in the bedroom at anytime day or night without having to plug in a monitor so there’s no excuse for not practicing at 3am while everyone’s sleeping.

Pros:
-Straight forward and simple mixer
-Excellent build quality
-Split Cue feature
-Aesthetically pleasing to the eye
-Switchable Line/Phono inputs for anyone using CD Players or Turntables

Cons:
-$600 price tag
-Only has unbalanced RCA outputs (No XLR outputs)

Conclusion: If you’re a beginner with the money, I’d recommend it if you don’t mind RCA outputs. Very good quality and great to learn on. The sound quality on the DJM-400 is more than adequate for any beginner but it will leave you wanting to upgrade after the comfort level has passed.

Traktor Scratch Pro

A few posts back I mentioned that I used my Vestax Spin with a program called Traktor Scratch Pro. Today I will be reviewing the Traktor software and giving thoughts from my own experiences of using it.

At first the software seems rather confusing and complicated especially if you are a beginner, as I was, when you first use it. The program is laid out with a file search section towards the bottom of the screen. This section allows you to look up songs either from your Itunes library or from other folders within your computer. Towards the middle of the screen is an internal mixer with many knobs and buttons. Coming from a beginner software that has very few options, if anything more than just a crossfader and equalizer, one may cringe at the thought of having to learn absolutely everything about another program all over. Fortunately as you begin to use the program, it is apparent that the design of the screen was meant to simulate the same layout as an external mixer with decks on either side. To the sides of the internal mixing section are the track waves where cues and loops can be set on a song, as well as the pitch/ speed of the track. Towards the top of the screen the FX section is found where you can set a row of three effects with their respective dry/wet knobs directly under. This can be changed into Advanced FX mode, which allows you to change the Dry/ Wetness, Filter, Feedback, and Rate of a single effect. Although as a beginner the advanced effects mode may not have much of a use, it can definitely help you out in getting the desired sound out of a certain effect. I must mention that the software allows for four deck mixing both internally and externally, which gives a lot of flexibility with the amount of things you can do with it.

The program is an easy alternative for beginner Djs looking to get started without having to shell out thousands for a mixer and vinyl decks, or cdjs. The program is easily capable of mixing with just a laptop or desktop computer. It also boasts an impressive Music Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) mapping ability. What this means is it allows someone to map any MIDI capable device to give certain buttons or knobs specific functions to be used in Traktor. I personally use the MIDI capabilities with my Vestax Spin, but there are also some CDJs like the Pioneer CDJ-900 or CDJ -2000 who have MIDI capabilities as well as some external mixers. While it may seem as though the software is catered to the MIDI crowd, it is actually intended to directly compete with Serato Scratch Live software, which was one of the first programs that allowed vinyl turntables or CDJs to be used in conjunction with music stored on a laptop or desktop computer. Traktor Scratch Pro comes with a pair of cables that connect to turntables and back into a USB soundcard which then simulates the turning and scratching of the turntables or CDJs on the pc and thus effects the music being played off the computer as if you were actually playing the music off of the turntables. I personally do not use this function nor have I ever tried it, but from what I’ve heard from friends that do use it. It is very good and intuitive.

The Software also comes with an Audio 8 DJ soundcard ($449) one of the best out on the market, and which pretty much comprises the bulk of the cost of the software package that comes in Traktor Scratch Pro. While I do not use the Audio 8 DJ for gigs as I do not need to use such a large soundcard for my setup, I have only heard amazing things about it.

All in all the software is quite good. While the internal mixer and features cannot truly compete against the sound and power of an external mixer, it is easily the best bang for the buck for Djs trying to start out. Traktor Scratch Pro can be used on Tunrtables, CDJS, and MIDI controllers, but if you aren’t looking to mix with Vinyl or CDJs I would opt for the cheaper Trakto Pro, which would save you a little over $300 at $229 US compared to Traktor Scratch Pro at $669 US.

Bottom line, I use Traktor Scratch Pro and I’ve never looked back. Do I think I could have done with just Traktor Pro for my setup? Definitely yes, but it leaves my options open for the future if I’d like to use CDJs or Turntables in the future.

On occasion, venues relatively close (meaning 1-3 hours away) to this cornfield of nothingness host good clubs events with names worth caring about. Last night, was one of those nights. Kenneth Thomas came to Necto in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Certainly would have been worth the money and drive to see him alone. However, in addition to his playing, Above & Beyond was headlining the show! So, let me get this straight. . . $17 to see Kenneth Thomas who was voted number one DJ in detroit AND Above & Beyond voted the number four DJs in the world. I would be crazy not to go, even if it was on a sunday night.

So, we headed out of this flat landed swamp around 9pm to arrive at Necto for the last hour or more of Kenneth Thomas' set, which was truly amazing. The sound system was great and the music was greater.

Then ABOVE & BEYOND. I can't really describe the sounds. It just sounded so amazing. The entire night was the ups and uppers of great trance music. The builds gave me adrenaline rushes and the breaks gave me goosebumps. What a night. It was the kind of night that reminded and affirmed why I want to DJ and the atmosphere it presented was unforgettable. Here are a few videos I took of the night!

Vestax Spin

I recently received my Vestax Spin a few days ago. Vestax is well known for it's audio products such as the Vestax VCI-100 and VCI-300, as well as its turntables and mixers that are used by some of the biggest names in Dj music like DJ Qbert, and M ix Master Mike.

The Vestax Spin is basically a cheaper version of the VCI-100, with less knobs and faders. It can be seen through the quality of the materials used on the Spin, as they are inferior to those found on the VCI-100 which is built with metal. Fortunately though even though the Spin is made of plastic, it is solid and does not feel like it is going to fall apart anytime soon. The faders could be better with a bit more resistance, as they feel very light and almost too easy to push. The jog platters are built with quality. They are touch-sensitive, and have a blue illumination underneath them when playing a song, and red when being touched. The controller was created with the beginner dj in mind, with a built in soundcard to allow pre-cueing right from the unit itself, without the need for a soundcard. One can easily just go to a party and connect the Vestax Spin directly into an amplifier or powered speakers, through its RCA outputs and play a set. It also comes with a microphone, but I personally don't use microphones for my sets so I couldn't really tell you if it is good or not.

The Spin comes with Algoriddim's Djay 3 software. The software is pretty decent considering it is packaged in with the unit. It allows mixing between two songs, with a few effects. Although it is good for the very primitive beginner, it lacks for the advanced dj out there who likes to use a large variety of effects and equalizers. The program is disappointing with setting cues, as it only allows for three cues to be set. Djay 3 also does not save the cues made on a song, and therefore requires that the cues be put in manually each time the song is being played. Mind you the software does sport a very tight integration with Itunes giving it an adavantage over other software when trying to track down that song you're thinking of playing next in your set.

All in all the Vestax Spin is a very good midi controller coming in at a price of $250 US or $280 CAN. It can only be purchased from the Apple store in North America. I personally use Traktor Pro with the Vestax Spin, thanks to a map created by Oldfashioned on djtechtools.com, which allows me to use all the effects and features of Traktor Pro on the Spin. As for the soundcard, it is fairly decent. Not bad for the beginner dj at all; I personally use the Audio 2 Dj soundcard from Native Instruments, which just adds a little bit of umph and power to my set. I'd say this is a very cheap and feasible option for those people just starting to DJ and don't have enough money to purchase decent CDJs or Turntables.

This controller is perfect for what I wanted which was a cheap solution to |DJ'ing while I saved up for better gear.

It may also be useful for mobile DJ's as i find mine incredibely easy to transport, It fits in most laptop bags for instance.

It haas a robust metal outer caseing but fiddly knobs and faders.

The inputs are the biggest and only real advantage of the RMX,

But they are a big advantage.

So yeah...pretty much wanted to post and say what I was going to bring to this blog. My first task is I'm going make a HUGE subsection of what I went through when I started DJing. Where I fell in love with music, the where's, why's and how's. Who I talked to, why I talked to them.

I've been actually spinning with my decks for just under 3 months now. Started Jan 1, 2010 as my resolution to make a dream come true. Cheesy as hell, right? I started talking to people about DJing last August, so...there was quite a lapse there.

So if anyone thinking about DJing stumbles upon this, then know that there is NO TIME TO EARLY to start getting 'in the know'. I had about 10 good DJs willing to help me out as soon as I got my decks. Point being: Get started now rather than later, you won't regret it.

It all started one evening at my university dorm, when I had absolutely nothing to do. So I just began to learn how to use a mixing program I had downloaded called Mixxx. It's absolutely free for PC/MAC. I began to realize I really enjoyed manipulating music, and I was fascinated at how well professional djs could totally change how a track sounds and feels.

I've been mixing on my computer for about 5 months. I just purchased a dj midi controller called the Vestax Spin. I pretty much just got it a couple of days ago, so i'll put up a post in a couple of days reviewing the Spin, and what I think about it. I currently use Traktor Scratch Pro as my computer mixing software. which has a ton of useful effects and tools to facilitate mixing. I've been using Traktor for some time now, so expect a review on it as well.

I Listen to Trance, Techno, Dance, Club, and Dubstep. My current favourite song is Pursuit of Happiness by Kid Cudi.

My All time favourite song, and the song that really started my love for electronic music is Infinity (klaas remix) by Guru Josh Project.
